Turkey’s opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu on Sunday criticised the government over what he called the collapse of the merit system in the state and said life and property were no longer safe in Turkey.

"The country’s economic woes are having a serious impact on the lives of ordinary people despite the government claim that the economy is recovering based on low inflation rates," T24 news site quoted Kılıçdaroğlu as saying during a speech he delivered at a conference of businesspeople in Istanbul.

“Laws are the set of rules that protect my life and property. If I do not have the security of life and property, why should foreign capital come? Nobody in Turkey has the security of life and property,” the CHP leader said.

Turkey ranks 109th out of 126 countries in the 2018-2019 Rule of Law Index prepared by the influential non-profit civil society organisation World Justice Project.

“When you destroy merit in the state, there is no concept of justice,” Kılıçdaroğlu said.

The CHP leader also blamed Turkey’s economic crisis for the recent string of family suicides in the country.

Asking why the suicides took place, Kılıçdaroğlu said, “you see women rummaging through the garbage for food. We are talking about Turkey in the 21st century.”

There have been two major incidents of family suicides in the last two weeks involving death by cyanide poisoning, as well as another mass suicide involving a child.
