Over 1,700 killed in workplace accidents in Turkey last year

Some 1736 people lost their lives in workplace accidents in Turkey last year, a Turkish daily said on Sunday, citing a report by the country’s Workers’ Health and Work Safety Assembly (ISIG).

A total of 68 of whom were killed in work-related accidents were child labours, and 28 of them were younger than 14, according to ISIG report, which was compiled based on information gathered from tens of local and national news outlets and personal and professional accounts.
 
Meanwhile, 112 migrant workers, the majority of whom were Syrians and Afghans, lost their lives last year in workplace accidents, the report said, adding that the construction, transportation and agriculture sectors saw the highest percentage of fatalities related to occupational accidents.
 
The country ranks first in Europe and third in the world in workplace deaths. 
 
Turkish Law on Workplace Safety and Health was adopted in 2012, but implementation has not had a significant effect on workplace fatalities and injuries.
