Last year, the 36 percent ceiling increase limit for private schools imposed by the Ministry of National Education (MEB) increased even more with the announced inflation figures.
In the formula applied according to the inflation figures announced yesterday, the ceiling increase rate to be applied in private schools will be 105 percent.
Parents, on the other hand, reacted to this rate and called for increases in CPI rates.
The Ministry of National Education (MEB), with its decision last year, had put into effect the change regarding the price hike rates of private schools.
With the application, the maximum rate of increase in education fees for the 2022-2023 academic year was determined as 36 percent.
Pointing out that the average of annual inflation is taken in the formula that allows the calculation of the raise rates, Ozkan, President of the Private School Parents Platform, stated that the maximum rate of increase will be 105 percent with the inflation data announced yesterday.
“A REGULATION ON ADDITIONAL SERVICES SHOULD BE IMPLEMENTED”
Inflation data announced by TURKSTAT was 64.27 percent on an annual basis and 1.18 percent on a monthly basis in December 2022.
In the light of these announced figures, Özkan pointed out that the ceiling increase was determined in the prices of private school tuition fees, and stated that the increase in the incomes of the parents was not that much.
Private school parents do not accept a ceiling increase over the increase in their income. The ceiling increase should be limited to the annual average CPI.
“NOT TEMPORARY, PERMANENT ARRANGEMENTS SHOULD BE MADE”
Stating that the ceiling hike arrangement made the prices even higher, Özkan noted that the ceiling hike regulation should be overhauled.
"Before 2009, the ceiling hike was limited to the CPI. If the annual average expression he added to the formula for the ceiling increase last year was not, the ceiling hike would have been 85 percent, not 105 percent. The Ministry should make a permanent arrangement instead of a temporary solution and bring back the arrangement before 2009," he said.
MINISTER OF NATIONAL EDUCATION OZER: “WE WILL PROTECT THE INTERESTS OF OUR PARENTS”
Minister of National Education Mahmut Özer said that after the Opening Ceremony of Kızılcahamam TOKİ Çağatay Primary School, upon the question of the journalists, they would make an assessment together with all representatives of private education institutions.
"Of course, we will not only look at the CPI-PPI ratios. Because the expectation of decreasing inflation in 2023 is very high. We will hopefully determine the new rate and announce it to the public in a way that will protect our parents and their interests," Minister Özer said.
