Health Workers Union (Sağlık-Sen), affiliated to the Memur-Sen Confederation, announced the results of the ‘Violence in Health Report’, which they prepare every month, for the month of May. With the report announced, it was observed that the violence increased day by day in the hospital corridors.
21 HEALTHCARE WORKERS VICTIMISED
According to the report, during the month of May, 13 cases of violence occurred both verbally and physically, and 2 occurred verbally. Ten of the violent incidents took place in hospitals, 3 in family health centers, and 2 in clinics. During the month, 11 doctors, 4 emergency medical technicians, 2 security guards, 1 nurse and 3 other health workers were victimized in 15 incidents of violence.
LEGAL SANCTIONS DO NOT HAVE A DETERRENT QUALITY
Emphasizing that the legal sanctions against the assailants are not deterrent, the report said, “The 12 attackers who were taken into custody were released. While an investigation was launched against 2 attackers, 2 attackers were arrested. While the decisions made by the judicial authorities in May sprinkle some water on the hearts, they still do not deter violence.”
DURMUŞ: “VIOLENCE IS NOT OUR FATE”
Evaluating the report they shared with the public, Sağlık-Sen Chairman Semih Durmuş said, “Violence in health is included among the catalog crimes. We believe that from now on, the attackers will be punished in the most severe way. However, we know that laws alone will not be enough. We can say that violence will not end until the root of the problems that cause violence in health is addressed and these problems are not resolved. We expect the authorities to show the exemplary solidarity they have shown in the law for the solution of chronic problems. Otherwise, violence will continue to be the 'destiny' of healthcare workers. As the authorized union, we do not accept this situation, we object, we reject it.”
