While there are 314,000 detainees/convicts in 384 prisons with a capacity of 271,000 Turkey has reached the highest prison occupancy in its history with this figure.

While Turkey ranked second after Russia with these figures, it caused comments such as "While other countries are at the top in technology, we are in prisons".
 
The number of detainees and convicts in Turkey has reached the highest level in history.
 
According to the data of the Ministry of Justice General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Houses, as of the end of March 2022 in Turkey; There are a total of 384 prisons, 269 closed, 86 open, 10 women's closed, 7 women's open, 8 children's closed, 4 children's education centers.
 
While the total capacity of these institutions consists of 271,823 people, there are 314,502 detainees and convicts in total in prisons.
 

42,000 PEOPLE INCREASED IN THE FIRST 3 MONTHS OF 2022

 
According to the data of the Ministry, there are 275,965 convicts and 38,537 detainees in prisons.
 
Of the prison population, 300,253 are men, 12,173 are women, and 2,076 are children.
 
While there were 272,000 detainees and convicts in total in prisons in 2021, this figure increased by 42,000 as of the first 3 months of 2022 and reached 314,000.
 
According to TURKSTAT data, at the end of 2020, there were a total of 267,000 people in prisons.
 

WE ARE THE SECOND MOST PRISONED COUNTRY

 
Turkey is pushing the championship in the number of detainees and convicts in prisons.
 
According to the SPACE 2021 report, which evaluates the Annual Prison Statistics of the Council of Europe, Russia is the country with the highest number of convicts with 478,714 convicts, followed by Turkey with 272,115 convicts.
 
According to the data for 2021, Russia, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Slovakia and Lithuania are at the forefront of the countries that have the highest rates of "incarceration in proportion to the population" in the member countries of the Council of Europe last year.
