While our country was mourned by the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş two weeks ago, severe earthquakes occurred one after another in Hatay on Monday evening.
While the earthquake issue has become the main agenda item in Turkey, the fear of the possible “big Istanbul earthquake” remains in our hearts. Geologist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür, who made a statement to Milli Gazete about the possible “big Istanbul earthquake”, used very important statements.
"EARTHQUAKE IS COMING FOR ISTANBUL"
Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür, in his statements to our newspaper, stated that he predicted that earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş would take place and that he had repeatedly expressed this situation before the public.
Saying that Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes came shouting, Görür said, "Kahramanmaraş earthquake is a very big earthquake. We lost a lot of our people. We gave advance warnings about Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes. We have been making a similar warning for Istanbul since 1999. We warn Istanbul. Earthquake is coming. Be careful."
“DAMAGE WILL BE AT LEAST AS MUCH AS THE MARAS EARTHQUAKE”
Naci Görür, who made remarks to the Milli Gazete on the possible “big Istanbul earthquake” issue, said that he feared that the expected earthquake in Istanbul would cause more damage than the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes.
Görür emphasized that in case of the expected earthquake in Istanbul, many lives will be lost and many buildings will be lost, and stressed that the balance sheet will be at least as bad as Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes.
“AFTER THE POSSIBLE 'GREAT ISTANBUL EARTHQUAKE', THE ECONOMIC WHEEL STOPS”
Naci Görür also expressed that Turkey would lose its economic independence following the possible “big Istanbul earthquake”.
"When an earthquake hits a city, it destroys all the components of that city. Economy is one of them. Marmara is the most productive region of Turkey. 60% of Turkey's industrial weight is in Marmara. After the possible 'big Istanbul earthquake', the economic wheel stops. Turkey's lifeblood is cut. We will be isolated from the world of industry and commerce. It is also very difficult to return the economy to the pre-earthquake state and takes 10-15 years. Turkey kneels down, loses its economic independence," Görür added.
“AT LEAST 59 THOUSAND BUILDINGS TO BE COLLAPSED”
"Is it too late to prepare for the possible 'big Istanbul earthquake'?" Answering our question, Görür made important remarks.
Noting that it was late in preparing for the earthquake that is expected to take place in Istanbul, Görür stated that they had been shouting since 1999 but no one heard their voices.
Naci Görür, at the end of his words, "Something has been done in the context of earthquake preparation in Istanbul, but it is not enough. Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality says that at least 59 buildings are not earthquake resistant. So these buildings will collapse in an earthquake. This means at least 100 thousand apartments. This corresponds to 500 thousand people. This is no joke. It is incomprehensible that we are moving at turtle speed while this is so serious," he said.
