Yusra al-Gannouchi, the daughter of the leader of the Ennahda Movement, Gannouchi, detained on April 17 at the time of iftar after a police raid on her house.
She told Anadolu Agency (AA) that her father and other opposition leaders were arrested in order to divert the reactions to the growing economic, social and political crises in Tunisia.
Reminding that her father was 81 years old and had hypertension, Gannouchi reminded that he was detained on the 27th day of Ramadan before iftar and continued as follows:
"Although the reason for my father's arrest is 'video recording of his conversation with the leaders of the National Liberation Front calling for civil war', no one believes it. The reasons for my father's arrest are the same as for other politicians, journalists and civil society volunteers who were arrested. Those arrested were arrested for opposing Qais Said's coup against Tunisian democracy from 25 July 2021. My father was at the forefront of those who opposed the coup from the very first moments. On the night of the coup, he rejected Said's unconstitutional decisions and went before the parliament with the deputies as the Speaker of the Parliament. This is the main reason why my father was arrested. Said scapegoats dissidents and immigrants for failing to find solutions to economic and political problems, but no one believes these pathetic attempts," she said.
"THE THREAT TO RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS IN TUNISIA"
Stating that President Said was trying to buy time against the reactions against him with political arrests, Gannouchi said, "We see that Tunisia is on the brink of economic bankruptcy. There are problems in accessing the most basic needs related to shelter and health. There are power and water cuts. Inflation is rising. Since President Qais Said has nothing to offer for a solution, he uses the arrests as distractions to hide his failure."
Emphasizing that Said went beyond damaging the democratic structure in the parliament and post-revolutionary institutions such as the Supreme Judicial Council with the controversial extraordinary decisions announced on July 25, 2021, Ghannouchi stated that the President deepened the problems in Tunisia rather than solving them.
