With the war between Russia and Ukraine, European countries, especially Turkey, faced crises in the field of energy. While Turkey is completely dependent on foreign countries in energy production, every incident experienced abroad continues to affect the citizens who use energy. Experts, on the other hand, drew attention to the importance of domestic energy systems against foreign dependence in energy, and underlined the necessity of orientation to domestic and national energy resources.
SEVİNÇ: “WITH GEOTHERMAL, WE CAN GET MORE ENERGY FROM OUR COAL RESOURCES”
Pointing out that Turkey has an important place in the world in the field of geothermal energy, which is one of the sources suitable for use in the energy field, senior engineer Canip Sevinç called for attention to be given to geothermal energy resources against the problems to be experienced in energy, and said, “The biggest reason for the delays in the sector is that we have not been able to establish a domestic and national energy production technology for energy which resources are in our motherland. Stand-alone our geothermal energy potential is an area where we can meet more than the electricity we can produce with all our coal resources.”
6 BILLION DOLLARS OF PROFIT CAN BE MADE WITH JUST HEATING
Noting that there are many institutions in the field of coal, Sevinç underlined that there are not enough institutions in the field of geothermal and that the necessary importance is not given. Sevinç added, “Although there are 2 or even 3 gigantic public institutions and dozens of private sector organizations working in the economy in the field of coal, geothermal resources still consist of a department within the public superstructure institution MTA. It is calculated that by using geothermal resources for heating, it can save a minimum 10 percent from the natural gas used in urban heating for the same purpose. The monetary equivalent of this is around 6 billion dollars in a year.”
“NATURAL GAS WILL LOST ITS PRESENT MEANING AND VALUE IN THE FUTURE”
Reminding the natural gas discoveries in the Black Sea, Sevinç emphasized that with the priority is given to geothermal resources on land will be more advantageous, Sevinç said, “Compared to the natural gas reserves we discovered in the Black Sea, geothermal resources to be determined on land will be even more beneficial for our country. After a while, using natural gas as an energy fuel will lose its current meaning and value, as it is the second largest producer of fossil-based carbon dioxide and other emission sources in the world after coal.”
