Chairman of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has rejected calls for a snap convention from the party’s defeated presidential candidate Muharrem İnce, expressing his frustration over the latter’s initiative.

I am not going to make a call for an extraordinary convention because there is no need for it,” Kılıçdaroğlu said.

I am of the opinion there is a special effort to sparking a debate in the CHP so the loss in the votes of the Justice and Development Party will be kept out of the discussion,” he said.

The in-house discussion grew after İnce suggested a change in the leadership of the CHP in a way in which he would resume the chairmanship and Kılıçdaroğlu would become the honorary leader as well as the parliamentary group leader of the social democrat party.

A leadership change is only possible through the votes of the CHP’s 1,266 delegates but the support of 634 delegates are required to even call for an extraordinary convention. Some dissidents in the party have already started works to collect signatures from the delegates but it is uncertain whether this effort will be sufficient.

Kılıçdaroğlu explained the party is still working on a comprehensive election analysis so the CHP will be much better prepared for the local elections slated for March 2019. “We will review all these in the upcoming Party Assembly and central decision-making body’s meetings. We will keep going with the strategy to be agreed on,” he said.

The CHP leader also reiterated his meeting with İnce on July 1 had been a private family gathering, which is why it was purely “political indecency” for the latter to reveal the content of their dialogue.
