More than 100 data tables and graphics in the "Education at a Glance 2022" report published by OECD were analyzed by TEDMEM and a report titled "Evaluation and Suggestions on Turkey" was prepared.

In the report, while the data on the relationship between education and employment draw attention, it was stated that Turkey lags behind OECD countries in the employment rates of higher education graduates, and this situation causes the function of education to be questioned.

A report titled "Evaluation and Suggestions on Turkey" was prepared by TEDMEM, an affiliate of the Turkish Education Association, by examining more than 100 data tables and graphics in the "Education at a Glance 2022" report published by the OECD. The report prepared included comparisons of data on all levels of education with OECD countries and evaluations on Turkey's situation in education. In the report, which includes many topics, it was noted that the relationship between education and employment in the context of OECD and Turkey is inverse.

“BETWEEN 25 AND 64 AGE RANGE, TURKEY IS THE COUNTRY THAT HAS THE LOWEST EMPLOYMENT RATE IN THE OECD”

According to the published report, it is noted that being a graduate of higher education provides employment advantage in almost all OECD countries, “In the OECD average, the employment rate of tertiary education graduates aged 25-64 is 85 percent, the employment rate of secondary or post-secondary-pre-tertiary education graduates is 75 percent, and the employment rate of non-secondary education graduates is 58 percent. In Turkey, employment rates for each of these education levels remain below the OECD average; even for the 25-64 age group, Turkey is seen to be the OECD country with the lowest employment rate with 57 percent,” the report said.

THE PROBLEM OF EMPLOYMENT OF HIGHER EDUCATION GRADUATES BRINGS THE PROCESS INTO QUESTION!

In the report, which also draws attention to the employment rates of Turkey by fields, it is stated that it is the OECD country with the lowest employment in every field except health, and in the light of the data, it is seen that Turkey has a low employment problem in general. In the report, which pointed out that the problem of low employment despite education raises questions about the functioning of education, “The low employment rates for all education levels in Turkey also makes the functions of education questionable. The fact that Turkey lags behind all OECD countries in terms of employment of higher education graduates, in particular, causes the attempts to increase access to higher education to be questioned,” the report added.

THE PROPORTION OF THE UNEMPLOYED FOR MORE THAN 12 MONTHS IN TURKEY INCREASES AS THE EDUCATIONAL LEVEL INCREASES

In the report, which draws attention to the fact that there is an increase in employment rates when graduating from educational institutions compared to the average of OECD countries, it is stated that this situation progresses differently for Turkey. “However, when we look at Turkey, it is seen that the situation valid for employment is not valid for unemployment. There are no significant differences between the unemployment rates of higher education graduates and the unemployment rates of individuals with lower levels of education in Turkey. In addition, the rate of those who have been unemployed for more than 12 months among the unemployed population increases as the education level rises, on the contrary to the OECD averages,” the report said.
