The case between South Africa and Israel will be heard at the International Court of Justice, which is the main judicial body of the United Nations and operates at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the administrative capital of the Netherlands. The hearings, which will last 2 days, start today.

BRITISH LAWYER MALCOLM SHAW WILL DEFEND ISRAEL

In the case, the South African side is expected to be represented by lawyers led by South African Professor John Dugard, who has previously been a judge at the ICJ several times, and the Israeli side is expected to be represented by British lawyer Malcolm Shaw.

15 JUDGES WILL HEAR THE CASE

While there are 15 judges elected for a 9-year term at the ICJ, these people generally consist of former judges, diplomats, lawyers and academics.

According to Article 31 of the ICJ Statute, when a case is heard among the judges of a country that is not a citizen, the party country can appoint a temporary judge, called "ad hoc", on the condition that he/she only works for that case.
