The family is getting smaller! Economic problems affect…

While the rate of households consisting of a single nuclear family decreased to 64,4 percent, the rate of single-person households increased to 18,9 percent.

The "Family with Statistics 2021" bulletin of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT) has been published. According to the results of the Address Based Population Registration System (ADNKS), the average household size in Turkey, which was 4 people in 2008, decreased and fell to 3,23 people in 2021. When analyzed by provinces, the province with the highest average household size in 2021 was Şırnak with 5,46 people. This province was followed by Şanlıurfa with 5,12 people and Hakkari with 4,94 people. The province with the lowest average household size was Çanakkale with 2,57 people. This province was followed by Tunceli with 2,60 people and Giresun with 2,63 people. According to the ADNKS results, the ratio of single-person households consisting of individuals living alone, which was 13,9 percent in 2014, increased to 18,9 percent in 2021. 
 

HOUSEHOLDS CONSISTING OF ONE NUCLEAR FAMILY DECREASED TO 64,4 PERCENT 

 
The proportion of single-nuclear households fell from 67,4 percent in 2014 to 64,4 percent last year. On the other hand, the proportion of households explained as extended family which consists of at least one nuclear family and other persons in the same period, decreased from 16,7 percent to 13,5 percent. The proportion of households with more than one person without a nuclear family increased from 2,1 percent in 2014 to 3,2 percent in 2021.
 

10,1 PERCENT OF HOUSEHOLDS HAVE SINGLE PARENTS AND CHILDREN 

 
In Turkey, 10,1 percent of the total households in 2021 consisted of single parents and children. It was determined that 2,3 percent of the total households consisted of fathers and children, and 7,8 percent of households with mothers and children. 
 

POVERTY RATE: 21,3 PERCENT 

 
According to the results of the income and living conditions survey, the poverty rate was calculated as 21,3 percent in 2021, according to the threshold determined by considering 60 percent of the equivalent household disposable median income. On the other hand, when the poverty rate is analyzed by household type, it is seen that 10,4 percent of single-person households, 20,9 percent of households with a single nuclear family, 27,2 percent of households with extended families, 16,6 percent of households consisting of more than one person without a nuclear family lived below the poverty line.
