Thorium reserves, which the Milli Gazete brought to the agenda on January 31st, are on the agenda again. While the studies on thorium did not progress, the first step came from ‘TENMAK’ and ‘TUBITAK’.

The energy supply problem, which is the biggest need of the world and our country, is increasing every year. The supply problem, which increased especially during the pandemic period, increased even more with the Russia-Ukraine War. The policy to be followed by Russia regarding the energy mines and the increasing prices with the effect of the war dragged the countries into an energy crisis. It is planned to produce energy using thorium in the nuclear power plants planned to be opened in Sinop and Thrace in the coming period.

IN RESERVE, TURKEY IS SECOND

Billions of dollars in our country have to be spent on primary energy sources purchased from abroad only for energy production. While the need for energy is increasing day by day, Turkey has to import the majority of primary resources, since most of the resources required for energy production are low in reserve resources. Thus, Turkey becomes a country dependent on foreign energy. Although Turkey ranks second in the world in terms of thorium reserves, however, studies on thorium-based energy have only just begun.

WORKS ON SALT REACTORS STARTED

In a plane crash in 2007, Turkey lost the scientists who made the most important research on thorium. Despite all the time that has passed since the accident, the cause of the accident has still not been determined. Although we have a large part of the world's thorium reserves on our soil, thorium remains underground as a reserve, and the Turkish Energy, Nuclear and Mining Research Institute (TENMAK) and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) have been informed that the first step, studies on salt reactors have started.
