Underlining that the reason for the crisis in sugar was due to the privatization in 2018, Karaduman stated that there are queues for bread, meat and oil in many parts of the country, and said, “This scene is the result of the wrong agriculture and livestock policy that has been carried out for years. It is almost as if the old Turkey is being shown to young people who have not seen the old Turkey today.”
Felicity (Saadet) Party Konya Deputy and Head of Youth Branch Abdulkadir Karaduman made evaluations on the agenda at the General Assembly of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM). Pointing out that the economy is poorly managed, Karaduman harshly criticized the statement of the Treasury and Finance Minister Nureddin Nebati, "The Turkish Lira (TL) is currently at its lowest level, there is no place to go yet". Calling the Justice and Development Party (AKP) administrators on behalf of the Saadet Party, Karaduman added, “Our open call is this; If you are not going to talk about numbers, if you cannot offer solutions to the bottleneck in the economy, ask for your pardon, this call is for all AKP administrators.”
Emphasizing that Turkey is not a poor country, Karaduman said that the government squandered resources and impoverished them. Criticizing the 48 percent hike made by the Meat and Milk Institution for meat and chicken products, Karaduman said, "One day a queue for bread, the next a meat queue, the other day a fight for oil... This scene is the result of the wrong agriculture and livestock policy that has been carried out for years. It is almost as if the old Turkey is shown to young people who have not seen the old Turkey. See, even just one example will suffice for us to understand the causes of the current crisis; Turkish Sugar's sugar production capacity was 65 percent before the privatizations in 2018, but after the factories were sold, its capacity was reduced to 35 percent. We started to import sugar from Russia right after the sale of the factories. At the point reached today, a 50 kilogram (kg) bag of sugar, which was 265 TL 4 months ago, is now sold for 700 TL. After sugar production was undermined, starch-based sugar, which is completely chemical, was approved and its use was expanded. Taking organic sugar from the table of the nation and replacing it with syrup produced in the laboratory is an obvious hostility. Starch-based sugar should be banned immediately across the country.”
