Greek Prime Minister Kiryakos Mitsotakis, who visited the Evros (Eric) region of Greece on the border with Turkey, promised to build a wall on the entire land border of the country with Turkey.
The Greek Prime Minister stated that the wall would be extended even without EU support.
MITSOTAKIS PROMISED TO BUILD THE ENTIRE BORDER WALL
Greek Prime Minister Kiryakos Mitsotakis visited the Evros (Eric) region of Greece on the Turkish border. Mitsotakis called for "financial support" to the European Union (EU) for the extension of the steel border wall on the Turkish border.
"I think the EU should allocate funds for such projects," he said.
COST 100 MILLION EURO
Making statements on border security, the Greek Prime Minister promised to build a wall on the country's entire land border with Turkey.
Continuing the pre-election campaigns planned to be held on May 21 in neighboring Greece, Mitsotakis stated that the estimated cost for the extension of the steel border is 100 million Euros.
“EVEN WITHOUT EU SUPPORT WE WILL DO IT”
The Greek Prime Minister stated that the wall would be extended even without EU support. Making a statement on EU funds in January, EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs Ylva Johansson, "If we spent money on walls or fences, there would be no money left for other things," she said.
Accusing the opposition SYRIZA of blocking the project, Mitsotakis continued as follows:
"I would like to express my regret that there are political forces fighting against this project in Greece today. The existing wall and the walls we promise will be an effective deterrent against illegal immigration. The wall we built helped prevent more than 250,000 crossings across our land border last year."
According to Kathimeri, the Greek government plans to extend the 37.5-kilometer-long steel wall by 35 kilometers in 12 months. Government officials report that another 100 kilometers will be added by 2026.
