While the figures and data announced by the government caused controversy, the economic crisis broke the back of the citizens. The data in the report prepared by Republican People’s Party (CHP) Istanbul Deputy Fethi Açıkel revealed the situation in the country. In the report, which includes important details, it was stated that the Turkish economy shrank by 20 percent between 2015 and 2020, while the national income decreased from 864 billion dollars to 720 billion dollars.
THE NUMBER OF THE POOR IS INCREASING QUICKLY
In the report, it was underlined that the income level of 90 percent of the society decreased due to high inflation and the cost of living, and emphasized that Turkey is the 8th country with the highest inflation among 178 countries. In the report, which stated that the number of poor reached 23,7 million in the last 5 years, it was pointed out that the number of citizens suffering from poverty due to food, fuel and rent costs will exceed 30 million by the middle of 2022. In the report, it was emphasized that for the first time in the history of the Republic, per capita income decreased for 7 consecutive years, the 1 percent of the people with the highest income in Turkey received 23 percent of the total income.
