The expectation for the minimum wage, which is 1,500-2,000 liras below the announced hunger limit, is at least to catch these figures.

What is necessary for a humane life is to set a figure above the hunger limit. Millions, who are currently struggling with the high cost of living and financial difficulties, expect a humane wage, not a minimum.

NEARLY HALF OF THE LABOR MARKET TRAINS TO “MINIMUM”

While approximately 4% of the workforce in European countries works for minimum wage, this rate approaches half of the total workforce in Turkey. The minimum wage, which used to be an indicator wage, has now turned into a poverty wage. According to official data, the minimum wage directly concerns a population of 7 million, and the population it affects is 25-30 million. The increase rate to be announced is important as it will also form the basis for the salary hikes of other wage earners.

The process of determining the new minimum wage, which directly concerns more than 7 million employees and indirectly all citizens, will start today at 14.00 with the first meeting at the Ministry of Labor and Social Security.

TÜRK-İŞ, representing the workers in the Minimum Wage Determination Commission of 15 people, consisting of workers, employers and government representatives, will convene the Board of Presidents hours before this meeting.

At the meeting, which will be attended by the managers of 34 unions that are members of the Confederation, the views and demands of the unions on the minimum wage will be received and the road map to be followed in the negotiations will be discussed.

IT WILL BRING FOOD INFLATION TO THE AGENDA

TÜRK-İŞ, in today's Minimum Wage Determination Commission, will bring up the figures in the Confederation's Hunger and Poverty Line Survey, the rates in food inflation and the income tax burden on wages.

HOW IS THE MINIMUM WAGE DETERMINED?

The Minimum Wage Determination Commission, which consists of 15 people, each of which is five representatives from the employee, employer and government, determines the minimum wage.

The Commission meets four times in December, on the basis of custom, as part of the work to determine the new minimum wage.

The commission, chaired by one of the members determined by the Ministry, convenes with the participation of at least 10 members and decides by majority vote.

In case of equality of votes, it is accepted that the party with the president wins the majority.

MINIMUM WAGE NET 5,500 LIRA

Of this, 6,471 liras is the gross minimum wage, 1.003 liras 1 kurus for social security premium, 129 liras 42 kurus for employer unemployment insurance fund.
