With the economic crisis, the prices in many areas of education increased exorbitantly. Despite the ceiling price limitation, especially in private school prices, the prices reached exorbitant rates. While the price of a good school in big cities reaches 100,000 Turkish Liras (TL) per year, parents are uncomfortable with the problems of the economic crisis being put on their shoulders.
A PRIVATE SCHOOL CAN CHARGE MORE THAN 100,000 TL FEE FOR A YEAR
Early registration benefits of many private schools have expired. While the registrations were applied at non-discounted prices, the prices of the schools drew attention. Prices between 30,000 TL and 100,000 TL appeared in front of parents who prefer private schools for their children to receive a good education in big cities. The serious differences between the monthly fees of some colleges and the minimum wage drew a reaction from the parents.
THE AVERAGE WAGE EVEN AT BACKSTREET 20,000-30,000 TL
While the period of early registration advantages by private schools ends in February, March and April, the discount period of 12,000-15,000 TL in early registration ends. Colleges started enrolling at list price. Speaking to our newspaper about the prices, Özgür Özkan, President of the Private School Parents Platform, said, “The economic crisis has increased private school fees abnormally. Fees range from 30 thousand to 150 thousand TL. The average wage is 20-30 thousand TL, even in pre-school classes aged 3-4, which can be called backstreet. The monthly fee of some colleges has tripled the minimum wage and reached 12 thousand TL.
PRICE INCREASES WITH OPTIONS
Expressing that the prices of private schools vary according to the cities, Özkan stated that the prices increase with the options, and added, "While the annual fee of the same private school in Anatolia was 30 thousand TL, it exceeded 100 thousand TL in big cities. Kindergarten fee was 100 thousand TL in some private schools, 120 thousand TL in primary school and 150 thousand TL in secondary education, excluding 8 percent Value Added Tax (VAT). There are colleges whose monthly installments exceed 12 thousand TL. The annual average of the meal fee excluding VAT varies between 8 thousand and 14 thousand TL. Options such as cash payment, single payment by credit card or installments are offered and the fee is increased.”
