Potatoes and onions were rotting in the warehouses, whose warehouses were raided after the price of up to 10 lira per kilo in the previous winter months and the producers and warehouses were charged with terrorists.

As in many products, due to the lack of a production strategy for onion and potato, the remaining two products are used as feed for animals.

The farmer saves on increased feed prices while feeding the onion to the sheep and the potato to his cows!

Dried onion, which was on the agenda for a long time with the prices that almost burned the pockets of citizens in the previous winter months, was in the hands of the farmer this year in the Suluova district of Amasya, which is one of the provinces where it is produced the most.

"I will either throw it away or give it to animals"

In the 1990s, the onion called red gold, which was called red gold, was grown with hope this year, but frustrated, the farmers started to pour their products into streams and feed them to their animals in order not to cause pollution.

Stating that farmers who cannot sell their onions bring their products to their pen, sheep breeder Sinan Ünlü said, "We feed our animals instead of wasting them by pouring the onions into the river."

"THE SITUATION IS DIFFERENT WITH THE POTATO... FEED IS EXPENSIVE"

Potatoes are rotting this year in warehouses that were raided in the previous winter. Nearly 500 thousand tons of potatoes in the warehouses in Niğde are now decaying.

The producers, who use potatoes that are left to rot in warehouses as animal feed, stated that they cannot sell the potato they cost 1 lira to the merchant even for 60 kurus and said, “We are now using the potatoes that we cannot sell as animal feed. If he waits a little longer, it will rot and then it cannot be used as animal feed”.

Producers are calling for potatoes to be bought through Agricultural Credit Cooperatives and turned into a food item the poor can consume, at least at the cost of the potato.

Dried onion, which was on the agenda for a long time with the prices that burned the pockets of citizens until 3 years ago, remained in the hands of the farmer in the Suluova district of Amasya, which is one of the most produced provinces, due to decreased consumption this year. Farmers, who raised the onion called 'Red gold' in hope this year because of its great gain in the 1990s, but were frustrated by the consumption of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, started to pour their products into streams and feed them to their animals in order not to cause pollution. Stating that farmers who cannot sell their onions bring their products to their pen, sheep breeder Sinan Ünlü said, "We feed our animals instead of wasting them by pouring the onions into the river." Referring to the fact that the herd of 100 sheep consume a trailer full of onions in two days, Ünlü said that he believes that it is beneficial for the health of his animals and that he also saves on feed. Barbaros Keklik, one of the farmers, said, “Unfortunately, none of the products of the farmer does not pay off. We cannot find a market. Imported products are constantly coming. The situation is the same in animal husbandry”.
