‘Türk-İş’ Labour Union Confederation shared the results of the "Hunger and Poverty Line Survey" for January with the public.
According to the figures announced, the hunger limit caught the new minimum wage before it even entered the workers' wallets.
According to the results of the research, the hunger limit increased to 4,250 Turkish Liras (TL), the poverty line to 13,844 TL, and the cost of living for a single employee rose to 5,587 TL.
In the research, which emphasized that the expenditures for a "human livelihood" are insufficient, "Food prices continued to increase this month due to the increases in agricultural inputs with high import dependency and high inflation expectations in the market. The New Year's minimum wage, which was announced at the press conference held at the Presidency on December 16, 2022 as 4,253 TL 40 kurus, with a net increase of 50 percent, reached the same level as the hunger limit, which is the amount of food expenditure that ensures a healthy and balanced diet for a four-person household, after about six weeks,” the research said.
KITCHEN INFLATION REACHED TO 60 PERCENT
In the statement, which stated that the increase in the foreign exchange rates and high inflation caused a high increase in the food basket, it was emphasized that the price hikes in fuel, natural gas, electricity and public transportation in the new year made it difficult for the workers and their families to make a living.
In the research, the following data were shared regarding the increase in food prices:
“The increase in the minimum amount of expenditure required for food by a family of four living in Ankara was 3,71 percent compared to the previous month. As of the last twelve months, the rate of increase has been calculated as 59,67 percent.”
