There is no sector that does not suffer from the cost of living. Flea markets, which are frequented by people with low purchasing power, are also in the grip of an economic bottleneck.

Flea markets, which are thought to be the last places to be hit by the economic crisis, are also having a hard time. The cost of living in Malatya has reduced the interest in the ‘flea market’ where second-hand goods are sold. Turan Arıs, who has been selling second-hand clothing for 22 years, said, "Citizens do not come here because their purchasing power has decreased." Flea market shopkeepers, who have been serving behind the courthouse for many years in Malatya, then moved to the shopping center of the metropolitan municipality and solved the space problem, complain of not being able to sell due to the high cost of living.

“NOT THAT MUCH INTEREST”

Tradesmen representative Mustafa Orhan said, “Our citizens were not entering because our old place was not clean. It was a closed box. Citizens weren't going to go shopping there," he said. Orhan, who stated that they sell clothing at affordable prices, “We sell a pair of trousers for 50 Turkish Liras (TL). The price of trousers in the bazaar is 150 TL,” he added. Orhan stated that they mostly sell trousers, shirts and shoes, and that the citizens prefer themselves because it is expensive in the center. He said that there is not much interest in these places these days.

“IN GENERAL CONSTRUCTION WORKERS AND VILLAGERS COMING TO US”

Turan Arıs, who has been selling second-hand clothing for 22 years, noted that they have moved to the new place for 5 months and they work for their own board.

Arıs stated that due to the decrease in purchasing power, the citizens did not show interest as before and said: "We can't buy goods anymore either. They want 50-60 TL for a pair of pants, we sell them for 20-30 TL. We cannot buy a new product to replace the product we sell. Citizens do not come here because their purchasing power has decreased. Generally, construction workers and villagers come to us. They come here because here were cheap. They usually buy trousers and shoes. Sales are stagnant. We're here working for peanuts."

Stating that they sell clothing at affordable prices, Mustafa Orhan said, “We sell a pair of trousers for 50 TL. The price of trousers in the bazaar is 150 TL. Since this place is new, there is not much interest, but we hope that it will attract a lot of attention in the future.” Orhan stated that they mostly sell trousers, shirts and shoes and said that the citizens prefer them because it is expensive in the center, but the interest is not very high because the center is newly established.

We only pay our rent with our salary. We work here for peanuts. I have been doing this job inherited from my father for 22 years. We were doing well in the old place. The rent is a bit high here, we are working hard.”
