In Turkey, especially in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir, news of a rise in bread, the basic food, began to come one after another. It is estimated that the flour sack, which was 260 Turkish Liras (TL) on average, will be sold for around 400 TL after the limitation imposed on the sack by the Turkish Grain Board (TMO) expired yesterday. The baker shopkeepers, who are already in a difficult situation due to the increasing costs and the decrease in the purchasing power of the citizens, are on the verge of closing for a long time. After the increase in flour, it is foreseen that there will be a 53 percent increase in bread in 81 provinces, especially in the big cities of Turkey. Accordingly, bread sold for 2,5 TL in November in Istanbul last year increased to 3 TL with a hike in February, and it was 3,5 TL with a hike in March. After all the hikes, the price of bread has been updated and is now sold for 4 TL.
TMO'S FLOUR REGULATION ENDED, FLOUR PRICES RISE AGAIN
After the successive hikes in flour prices, TMO took over the event as of September 2021. TMO with flour regulation, started to sell flour for 220 TL, the sack of which was 450 TL, and aimed to avoid the price hikes. This initiative did not provide much of a solution and TMO increased the flour sold for 220 TL in October to 260 TL. However, as of June, TMO's flour regulation came to an end and it is predicted that the flour sack sold for 260 TL will be sold for approximately 400 TL. The statements of TMO and the predictions in the market are that a similar move will not be made again. After the end of the flour regulation, news of a rise in bread started to come in all of Turkey, especially in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir.
