The announcement arrives a day after Turkey and Russia agreed to extend a ceasefire along the Syrian border with Russia overseeing the withdrawal of YPG from the region.

“The sanctions will be lifted unless something happens that we are not happy with,” CNBC quoted Trump as saying at the White House.

The U.S. president also called Turkey’s temporary cease-fire in the area “permanent,” adding, however, “you will also define permanent in that part of the world as somewhat questionable.”

Trump said Turkey had assured him that it would cease fighting in the region and would make the recently-agreed ceasefire permanent.

Turkey on Oct.9 launched Operation Peace Spring, initially pressing forward to clear an area between Tel Abyad and Ras al Ayn in northeast Syria of SDF and its affiliate YPG.

The offensive followed the withdrawal of U.S. troops from northern Syria.

The Turkish-Russian deal on Tuesday was announced hours before the end of a 120-hour pause to Turkish offensive agreed by Turkey and the United States last week for the withdrawal of the SDF to 32 km south of the area between Tel Abyad and Ras al Ayn.

“Let someone else fight over this long blood-stained sand,” Trump said in reference to the region.

The U.S. president also hit back against criticism, which has come from across the U.S. political spectrum, over his decision to pull American forces out of northern Syria.

“The same people that I watched and read giving me and the United States advice were the people that I have been watching and reading for many years. They are the people who got us into the Middle East mess, but never had the vision or the courage to get us out,” Trump said. “They just talk.”

Trump said there was no risk that the turmoil in the area could lead to a reconstitution of Islamic State (ISIS), which has lost its once sizeable territories and has thousands of members and their relatives kept in camps controlled by the Kurds.

The U.S. President said  that a "small number" of U.S. soldiers would remain nearby, but purely to guard oil facilities.
