An explosion at the Tüpraş oil refinery in Turkey’s Izmir on Wednesday left four people dead.
The explosion occurred at 09.25 local time, seriously injuring four people who were taken to the local hospital in Izmir.
The explosion allegedly occurred during the maintenance of a storage tank as a result of pressure, initial reports stated.
"This is a work accident, and not an attack," said Aliağa district governor Bayram Yılmaz.
Tüpraş is Turkey’s only oil refiner, and operates a total of four refineries. The company controls all of Turkey’s refining capacity.
The İzmir Refinery has a 400,000 tons/year capacity base oil production unit, the only one of its kind in Turkey. In 2015, İzmir Refinery achieved sales of 10.4 million tons, 6.8 million tons of which were sold domestically.
