Turkey late Friday condemned the terrorist attacks in the southern French cities of Trebes and Carcassonne.

"We condemn the terror attacks that took place today in the cities of Carcassonne and Trebes in France," the country's foreign ministry said in a written statement.

"We extend our condolences and wish fortitude to the families of those who lost their lives, and speedy recovery to those wounded," the statement read.

Earlier on Friday, a gunman, identified as Redouane Lakdim, killed three people in a shooting spree and hostage siege "claimed" by the Daesh terror group, according to the French authorities.

Lakdim was later killed by police.

According to French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb, the 26-year-old gunman, from the nearby town of Carcassonne, was known to authorities for petty crimes but there were no signs of radicalization.

Paris anti-terrorist prosecutors have launched a probe.
