Turkey raises tea, sugar prices after Istanbul election

Turkey’s General Directorate of Tea Enterprises increased the price of tea by 15 percent.

The Istanbul elections captured the whole agenda in the process until 23 June. With the completion of the elections, the real agenda of the people immediately showed itself. 15 percent for tea, 16 percent raise for sugar; diesel fuel also increased by 22 cents.

Turkey Sugar Factories Inc. announced a 16 percent hike to sugar. In the statement made on the official website of Türk Şeker, the ex-factory sales price of the packaged crystal sugar in 50 kg polypropylene bags was increased by 16% (excluding VAT) to 3.57 TL / Kg as of 25.06.2019.
 
The decision is effective immediately, said the state-run company, which is based in the northeastern city of Rize.
 
The price hike comes two days after an election for the mayor of Istanbul. The election was won by opposition candidate Ekrem Imamoğlu, who garnered 54 percent of the vote compared with 45 percent for Binali Yıldırım, the governing party’s candidate.
 
Turkey’s government, seeking to bolster its support during a severe economic downturn, and state-run regulators have delayed price increases on a range of products this year.
 
The nation voted in local elections on March 31. The Istanbul election was rerun after the governing party challenged the result.
