Yasemin Adar became the first-ever Turkish female wrestler to win gold at the World Championships on Wednesday, according to the games’ official website.
Adar, 25, beat Vasilisa Marzaliuk of Belarus 5-4 in the 75-kilogram (165-pound) category in the final match of the games in Paris.
“I am really happy. I am proud of myself as I have Turkish people experience this happiness,” Adar told state-run TRT Spor TV channel.
“I made a history as titling the world champion. Our goal is the Olympics now,” Adar added.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan congratulated Adar in a telegraph, according to the Presidential Press Center.
