The Senate Intelligence Committee late Wednesday issued a subpoena to former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn for documents relating to his contacts with Russian officials.

The subpoena came after Flynn declined to cooperate with the committee’s request for papers on April 28, according to chairman Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina and vice chairman Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia.

The committee is conducting an investigation into Moscow's alleged meddling in last year's presidential election.

Less than a month after appointing him, President Donald Trump fired Flynn for misleading Vice President Mike Pence and senior administration officials regarding the nature of his interactions with Russia's ambassador to the U.S., according to the White House.

In March, Flynn offered to testify before congressional intelligence committees in exchange for immunity from prosecution, but his offer was rejected.

The subpoena comes a day after President Trump removed James Comey as FBI director during an ongoing investigation into ties between the Trump campaign and Moscow.
