Felicity (Saadet) Party Deputy Abdulkadir Karaduman brought the rapid decline in the number of farmers to the agenda of the Turkish Grand National Assembly.

Karaduman, who submitted a parliamentary question to the Presidency of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, asking the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Vahit Kirişci to answer, asked the reason for the decrease in the number of farmers.

HOW MANY FARMERS LEFT AGRICULTURE?

Karaduman asked the following questions to the Minister of Agriculture Kirişci:

  • How many farmers have registered to the Farmer Registration System in the last ten years?
  •
  • What is the number of farmers who did not register with the Farmer Registration System and quit farming in the last ten years?
  •
  • What is the estimated number of farmers who are not registered in the Farmer Registration System as of the date of submission of the questionnaire?
  •
  • Do you have a study on the reasons why farmers do not register in the registration system, and if so, what are they?
  •
  • As your ministry, do you have any work that will stop farmers from turning away from agriculture and return agricultural lands to production?
  •
  • Do you have an agricultural production and employment project that will reduce the burden of our farmers, increase production and evaluate our agricultural lands with production?

DECLARE AGRICULTURE, STRATEGIC STATE

Karaduman stated that the farmers were struggling with debts and interest.

"We observe that the number of farmers registered in the system has decreased since 2006, when the Farmer Registration System regulation began to be implemented. Parallel to the decrease in the number of farmers and people working in agriculture, a decrease is observed in the number of herbal products. It is a fact that developed countries give priority to agriculture and nationalism in food has risen all over the world since the start of the pandemic. What are we waiting for to declare agriculture and food a strategic state?" Karaduman said.
