Hak-İş and Memur-Sen each published a report regarding the tax regulation that has come to the agenda.
Hak-İş released its report titled “Tax and social policies in the fair distribution of welfare”, while Memur-Sen released its report titled “Fair, reasonable and sustainable tax system findings and suggestions” to the public.
Hak-İş and Memur-Sen called for justice to be provided for employees in tax in their statements.
“ALTERNATIVE TAX POLICIES ARE NEEDED”
Hak-İş General President Mahmut Arslan, who made statements regarding the report prepared by Hak-İş, drew attention to the fact that inflation affects employees and the low-income segment of society.
"Current income and wealth inequality is at a level that will directly affect the social fabric, family structure and crime rates in society, therefore alternative tax and social policies are needed," Arslan said.
Arslan stated that many data were compared in the prepared report, and drew attention to the process that started with the Covid-19 pandemic in particular.
"The COVID-19 pandemic has further increased income inequality in the world, the high inflation that started after the pandemic and the decline in employees' incomes continue. In contrast, social policies are gaining importance for the fair distribution of national income and welfare. It is necessary to develop fairer tax policies," Arslan added.
“THE APPLIED TAX SYSTEM IS NOT FAIR”
Making statements regarding the report prepared by Memur-Sen, Memur-Sen Deputy Chairman Hacı Bayram Tonbul stated that they see justice in taxes as a matter of social justice.
"We strive to fulfill our responsibility for a fair and sustainable tax system that will reduce the tax burden on the large mass of people with fixed incomes. Our report titled ‘A Fair, Reasonable and Sustainable Tax System’ prepared by Mustafa Çolak under the coordination of Memur-Sen Academy frames the picture that disrupts or hinders justice in taxation and presents a comprehensive and holistic solution model with policy recommendations," Tonbul said.
Stating that justice in taxation is important for social peace and justice, Tonbul drew attention to the current tax system.
"Through indirect taxes, which constitute the center of gravity of our tax system, the entire society is taxed, regardless of whether they have income or not, especially those with fixed incomes. As a result of neoliberal policies, taxation regardless of income status for even the most basic needs from medicine to water, from bread to baby food is not humane and fair, and the practice of taxation regardless of income status is also unfair in that it causes the rich and the poor to pay the same tax," Tonbul added.
