‘Genç Memur-Sen’, the youth branch of ‘Memur-Sen’ Union, shared the "Youth Employment Report" with the public. Speaking at the program held at ‘Memur-Sen’ Headquarters, ‘Genç Memur-Sen’ Chairman Mustafa Başkara said, “Youth unemployment in our country, which has a young population of 11 millions, causes many social problems as well as economic problems. For example, in the environment of the global crisis experienced with the pandemic, young workers have experienced a decrease in employment almost 2,5 times more than adults.”

‘Genç Memur-Sen’ shared the “Youth Employment Report” with the public. Speaking at the program, ‘Genç Memur-Sen’ Chairman Mustafa Başkara stated that the report was handled in terms of supply and demand by examining the current situation of the recent labor market, regulatory actors and policy documents related to the subject, “effective policy areas have tried to be determined, and solutions have been proposed. In addition to these, the expectations of young people from the labor market were evaluated with a survey, and the perspectives and wishes of young people were shared with the public in the report,” he added.

93 PERCENT OF YOUTH THINKS, THERE ARE NO EQUAL CONDITIONS IN EDUCATION AND JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Emphasizing that striking results emerged within the scope of the "Youth Labor Market Expectations Survey", Başkara explained the answers of the youth regarding the survey conducted within the scope of the report, and said, “84,5 percent of the youth wanted to work while continuing their education if there was a suitable job. 62,3 percent of the survey participants stated that they want to live abroad. 93,1 percent of the youth thinks that they do not compete on equal terms in accessing education and job opportunities. When we ask about their expectations about Turkey's future, almost half of the participants state that they expect a country with higher unemployment rates than the current situation and a country with constant brain drain.”

IT IS COMMON TO BELIEVE THAT STUDYING AT A UNIVERSITY DOESN'T HAVE ANY BENEFITS IN COMING TO A JOB

Stating that the young people's expectations in the private sector are not met in the survey, Başkara explained that they tend to work in the public sector, "46 percent of the young people want to work in the public sector, while 43,9 percent wants to start their own business. Young people stated that the most important problem, they face in the private sector is insufficient wages. This is followed by the lack of job guarantee and overtime hours, respectively. It is seen that the vast majority of young people adopt and demand flexible working styles. 69,6 percent of young people do not think that university education is vital for getting a job,” he added.

“REGULATIONS ARE NEEDED IN EDUCATION POLICIES”

Stating that arrangements should be made in education policies regarding youth unemployment, Başkara said:

“In the perspective of the skills of the future, the competencies of education policies at the point of gaining skills should be increased and the private sector should undertake more tasks in the provision of professional knowledge. If necessary, education curricula should be reduced, and the resources spent on education should be transferred to the private sector as in-service training incentives. The effects of active labor force policies should be continuously monitored and evaluated more effectively by İŞKUR.”

“ECONOMIC ROADMAP SHOULD BE DETERMINED IN THE LIGHT OF CONCRETE DATA”

Offering solutions to the problems that arise in relation to youth employment, “Efforts should be focused on making the labor market a structure that produces qualified employment and can compete in the international market. While preparing growth and economy-oriented policies, employment and labor market should be taken into consideration. Top policy documents should draw an economic roadmap to the supply side of the workforce, and short, medium and long-term employment policies are shaped by concrete forecasts and expectations, should be prepared according to the map. The costs of higher education policy should be reviewed and it should be planned together with the situation of the labor market,” Başkara added.
