A conference titled "Current Political Situation in Ethiopia" was held at the African Coordination and Education Center (AKEM), which presents political, cultural and academic research on the African continent. Participating as a speaker at the conference held at AKEM's headquarters in Istanbul Fatih, Ethiopian Diaspora Agency President Dr. Mohammed Ali Endris made remarkable evaluations regarding the current political situation in Ethiopia.
TIGRAY PEOPLE'S LIBERATION FRONT IGNORED CENTRAL GOVERNMENT
Evaluating the ongoing conflicts between the rebel Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) and the central government in Ethiopia, Endris said, "The conflicts in Ethiopia do not have a religious aspect, it would be more accurate to evaluate these conflicts with their historical and political aspects. The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) argues that they have the right to rule Ethiopia because it is an armed organization. TPLF ignored Ethiopia's central government after holding elections in its own region and declared itself as the legitimate government. This revolt against the Addis Ababa government was also the beginning of the political crisis in the country.”
THE WEST DID NOT MEET THE EXPECTATIONS IN ETHIOPIA
Endris said that the Western states remained indifferent to the solution of the political crisis in the country because they could not obtain the concessions they expected from the Ethiopian government, and stated, "When Abiy Ahmed, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019, became the Ethiopian prime minister, he had closer relations with Western countries, and reforms were being made. However, Western countries' economic and political expectations from Ethiopia were always higher. They wanted faster economic liberalization, but this process was not as fast as they expected. The West always wants weak governments. They never want a government that stands on its own feet.”
