The September 2022 results of the ‘Hunger and Poverty Boundary Survey’ conducted by Türk-İş Confederation every month in order to reveal the living conditions of the employees and to determine the reflections of the price changes in basic necessities on the family budget were announced. According to the research, the "hunger limit", which expresses the amount of food expenditure that a family of 4 should make in order to have a healthy, balanced and adequate diet this month, was 7 thousand 245 TL. The "poverty line", which corresponds to the total amount of other compulsory expenditures for food and clothing, housing, transportation, education, health and similar needs, was calculated as 23 thousand 600 TL. The “cost of living” of a single employee was determined as 9 thousand 470 TL per month. The minimum amount of food expenditure for a family of 4 living in Ankara increased by 5,15 percent compared to the previous month, while the rate of increase was 130 percent as of the last 12 months. Thus, the hunger limit was realized as 1,745 TL above the minimum wage, which was 5,550 TL. The difference between the hunger limit and the minimum wage was around 1,390 TL last month.
PERMANENT POVERTY WARNING
In a statement made by Türk-İş Confederation, “TL is depreciating, prices are rising, purchasing power is falling rapidly. Fixed-income people lack even the ability to have a balanced, adequate and healthy diet. As all forms of inflation, from demand to costs and expectations, distort the prices of all assets, goods and services, this temporary deprivation threatens to turn into permanent poverty in the foreseeable future,” the statement said.
